  임창환 교수는 서울대학교 전기공학부(현, 전기정보공학부)를 졸업하고 동 대학원에서 석사, 박사학위를 취득했다. 미국 미네소타주립대 연구원과 연세대학교 의공학부 조교수를 거쳐 2011년부터 현재까지 한양대학교 공과대학 바이오메디컬공학과 교수로 재직 중이다. 현재 대한뇌파신경생리학회 회장과 한국뇌공학회, 대한의용생체공학회, 대한뇌기능매핑학회의 이사를 역임하고 있으며 한양대학교 뇌공학연구센터 센터장을 맡고 있다. 임창환 교수는 현재까지 뇌공학과 패턴인식, 생체신호처리, 의료인공지능 분야에서 220편의 SCI급 저명학술지 논문을 발표했으며 IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering, Scientific Reports, Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 등 6개 국제학술지의 부편집장을 맡고 있다. 임창환 교수는 특히 인간의 뇌와 기계를 연결하는 뇌-컴퓨터 인터페이스 분야에서 세계적으로 두각을 나타내고 있는 뇌공학자로서 공학문화의 확산과 학문 후속세대 양성에도 관심이 많다. 최근에는 생체신호에 인공지능 기술을 적용하여 개인의 감정이나 의도를 인식하는 패턴인식 기술, 신경신호를 이용하여 정신질환을 진단하고 전자약을 이용해 치료하는 디지털 헬스케어, 뇌신경계의 작동 메커니즘을 모사한 인공지능 기술 개발 등에 주력하고 있다. 저서로는 과학분야 베스트셀러인 『뇌를 바꾼 공학, 공학을 바꾼 뇌』(2015)와 『바이오닉맨』(2017), 『브레인 3.0』(2020), 『우리 뇌를 컴퓨터에 업로드할 수 있을까』(2020), 『뉴럴링크』(2024), 그리고 세계적인 출판사 Springer에서 출간한 교재 『Computational EEG Analysis』(2018) 등이 있으며 공저에는 『4차 산업혁명, 문제는 과학이야』(2018), 『교실 밖에서 듣는 바이오메디컬공학』(2021) 등이 있다. 현재 한양대학교에서 계산지능 및 뇌공학 연구실(cone.hanyang.ac.kr)을 운영하고 있다.

  (Biography)
  Dr. Euiheon Chung is Professor and Chair of the department of biomedical science and engineering at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) since 2011 and has been the director of the Gliopathic Pain Research Center, the Joint Project of Institutes of Science and Technology that resulted in co-founding 4PMx Inc., a medical therapeutics startup for chronic pain. He graduated from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in Daejeon, Korea, with M.S. and B.S. degrees in aerospace engineering with a minor in physics in 1998 and 1996. He received his Ph.D. from the Harvard‐MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST) Medical Engineering and Medical Physics program in 2007 under Prof. Peter T. C. So at MIT. While in graduate school, he helped a biotechnology start‐up company Nanopoint Inc. as a technical consultant. Besides, he worked for a medical venture company Cambridge Devices Inc. Since then, he joined Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School as a research fellow in the Steele Laboratory for tumor vascular biology with Prof. Rakesh K. Jain. His research aims to create translational biophotonic technologies to satisfy unmet clinical needs based on biomedical engineering approaches. Dr. Chung’s neurophotonics laboratory focuses on neurovascular diseases and neuropathic pain with functional optical imaging and neuromodulation.
